35% of leads come in after 5PM.
If you don't respond within 5 minutes of a call, conversion drops 80%.
By morning, they've already called someone else.
The businesses closing that gap are seeing real results.
Air Texas booked a $20K job from their very first after-hours call and canceled their $2,000/month answering service.
Premier Heating & Air cut response time from 12 minutes to 1 and tripled lead conversion.
Air Design ran 187 membership jobs through automated outreach and generated $24K with zero manual work.
That's what happens when every call gets answered, every lead gets followed up, and every membership gets worked, automatically.
Podium's AI Operating System does all of it, in one place, built specifically for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and garage door companies.
FROM THE DESK
I keep a full car emergency kit in my trunk (Issue 4, Issue 45). But last week I needed a flashlight and a bandage while I was three miles from my car in a parking garage. The trunk kit was useless. What I needed was something in the glove box I could reach from the driver's seat. This week, we build the ultra-compact kit that fills that gap.
Here's what I've got this morning.
THE BRIEF
The Glove Box Kit: Always Within Reach
Your trunk kit handles extended scenarios. Your go-bag handles evacuation. The glove box kit handles the everyday moments: a flat tire at night, a minor cut, a dead phone, or an unexpected delay. It's the kit you can reach without leaving your seat.
The constraints are size and environment. Everything must fit in your glove box or center console. It must survive temperature extremes (hot cars in summer, freezing cars in winter). Items should be useful for the most common vehicle scenarios.
Contents: a small flashlight (Streamlight Microstream or similar), a basic first aid pouch (4 bandages, antiseptic wipes, 4 pain relievers), a USB charging cable, a $20 bill, a printed emergency contact card, a small multitool or knife, a pen, and a few zip ties. Optional: a window breaker/seatbelt cutter tool.
Total weight: under 1 pound. Total size: fits in a quart zip-lock bag. Total cost: about $30 to $40 if you buy everything new.
The window breaker deserves mention. In a vehicle accident where doors are jammed and the car is submerged or on fire, a spring-loaded window breaker shatters tempered glass instantly. A seatbelt cutter handles jammed buckles. Combined tools cost $8 to $15 and mount on the visor or console within arm's reach. This is the most scenario-specific life-saving tool in this issue.
Rotate temperature-sensitive items seasonally (Issue 78). Medications in a hot car degrade. Protein bars melt. Hand warmers in summer are dead weight. The core items (flashlight, multitool, contacts, cash) stay year-round.
ONE THING THIS WEEK
Assemble a glove box kit in a quart zip-lock bag.
Flashlight, bandages, $20, charging cable, contact card. Put it in the glove box. Done. You now have emergency essentials within arm's reach every time you drive.
ON THE RADAR
A car accident happens every 13 minutes in the U.S. — 120 people die daily on American roads
National Safety Council 2026 data. In March 2026, an estimated 3,030 Americans died in traffic crashes — down 6% from 2025, but still roughly one fatal crash every 15 minutes somewhere in the country. Most crashes don't kill anyone, but they do strand people, injure people, and leave them needing exactly what's in this week's glove box kit. The question isn't whether you'll need it. It's whether it'll be within reach when you do.
LESSON FROM: JOEL LAMBERT
Joel Lambert's SEAL training instilled the principle that critical gear must be immediately accessible, not stored where you have to dig for it. In A Navy SEAL's Bug-In Guide, he describes how SEALs position essential equipment where it can be reached in seconds, not minutes. For vehicle preparedness, that means the tools you need most urgently live where you can grab them from the driver's seat, not buried in the trunk.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
West Nile Reaches Houston — Texas Confirms First Neuroinvasive Case of 2026
Harris County health officials confirmed Texas's first case of West Nile neuroinvasive disease for 2026 — the severe form that can cause brain inflammation, paralysis, and death. Positive mosquito pools were confirmed in San Antonio in May and New Orleans in early June, weeks ahead of the typical July start. Above-average rainfall across the Gulf South is creating ideal breeding conditions for Culex mosquitoes. Texas and Louisiana are actively spraying; the window to protect yourself is before peak summer, not during it.

WHAT I'M TESTING
ResQMe Window Breaker and Seatbelt Cutter
A spring-loaded window breaker and recessed seatbelt cutter in a device the size of a car key fob. Clips to the visor, keychain, or console. I tested it on a junkyard window: one press shattered the glass cleanly. The seatbelt cutter sliced through webbing in one motion. About $10.
Budget alternative: A center punch from the hardware store ($5). Works as a window breaker. Add a small knife for seatbelt cutting. Less elegant, equally functional.
OVERRATED / UNDERRATED
Overrated: Elaborate vehicle survival kits that fill the entire trunk. Most vehicle emergencies are resolved by a phone call, a flashlight, or a $20 bill. The comprehensive trunk kit handles extended scenarios. The glove box kit handles the 95%.
Underrated: A printed emergency contact card in your glove box. If you're incapacitated, first responders or good Samaritans need to know who to call. Your locked phone doesn't help them. A visible card does.

NEXT ISSUE
PS: The glove box kit sits right next to my registration and insurance cards. I've used the flashlight twice, the bandages once, and the $20 once. Four uses in six months. Each time, I was glad it was there and I didn't have to pop the trunk.
