Why Overseas Producers Can't Undercut Atlas Salt, Even for Free
Cities are already running short on road salt, and winter hasn't even started. Some supply bids are going unanswered, prices have nearly doubled in parts of the market, and the backup plan is two weeks away by boat. Here's why Atlas Salt (TSXV: SALT | OTCQX: SALQF) can get salt to the people who need it most, faster and cheaper than anyone shipping from overseas:
• Three days by ship to Boston, not fourteen
• Shallow deposit that's cheaper and faster to mine
• Projected C$188M a year in free cash flow
• Export Development Canada interested in lending C$150M
• Early supply deal with top U.S. salt distributor
The Ready Brief #239
Practical preparedness for uncertain times

FROM THE DESK
Many preparedness plans end with "and then we walk," and few people test whether they can. Today's issue is about trail running as a way to build that ability: steady movement over uneven ground. The lead story is the record $6.3 billion Binance theft, and on the radar is a recall of about 338,800 DREO space heaters.
THE BRIEF
Trail Running as Functional Fitness
Preparedness talks a lot about gear and skills, and less about whether you can walk five miles with a loaded pack, climb a hill or cover rough ground quickly. Physical fitness is the skill the other skills depend on, and trail running is one way to build the kind that applies when a disruption puts you on foot.
The difference between trail and road running is the surface. Roads are predictable. Trails are not: roots, rocks, mud and uneven grades demand constant small corrections, and you learn to look ahead and place your feet deliberately. Those habits carry over to picking your way through storm debris, crossing a dark house during an outage, or covering ground on foot during an evacuation.
You do not need to be fast. For preparedness the goal is sustained movement over imperfect terrain, not pace. A steady jog or fast walk for 30 to 60 minutes on uneven ground is closer to what an evacuation on foot asks of you than a sprint on a flat track, because you would likely be moving for a long time and often carrying something.
Start easy. Walk the trail first and learn the terrain, the elevation changes and the surface conditions. Then add running intervals: run the flats and gentle downhills, walk the steep climbs, and let the running portions grow as your fitness and confidence do. For a baseline, the CDC says adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week and at least 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity.
Trail terrain asks more of the small stabilizing muscles around the ankle than a flat road or a fixed-path gym machine does, which can help on a dark staircase or a debris-covered street. Uneven ground also raises the chance of a fall or a rolled ankle, so slow down on technical sections and carry a headlamp if you might finish after dark.
Footwear matters. Trail shoes have deeper tread than road shoes and grip better on wet rock and loose dirt. You do not need to spend a lot: the Altra Lone Peak 9 we recommend below ran about $105 to $145 on Amazon depending on color and size.
Rucking, walking with a weighted pack, pairs well with trail running. Run light on some days and walk with a pack on others, adding weight gradually. Carrying a load on trails builds leg and back strength that applies to a loaded evacuation, while the running keeps your cardio base up.
Trail running also demands constant attention to the ground ahead. Some runners describe that focus as a mental reset, which can be useful for people who spend a lot of time thinking about what could go wrong.
The barrier to entry is low: shoes and access to an unpaved trail, path or park. No gym membership is needed. Start this week.
ONE THING THIS WEEK
Walk a trail near your home.
Find the nearest trail, greenway or unpaved path. Walk it for 30 minutes and pay attention to the surface: roots, rocks and changes in grade. Next time, jog the easy sections.
ON THE RADAR
DREO Recalls About 338,800 Space Heaters After 17 Ignition Reports
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of the DREO DR-HSH015 on Oct. 29 (recall 27-054). It covers about 338,800 units in the U.S. and 36,300 in Canada, sold from September 2025 through October 2026 for $70 to $110 at Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Kohl's, QVC and Dreo.com. CPSC lists 17 reports of heaters igniting, three with property damage and one hand burn. Owners should stop using the heater, unplug it, cut the cord and follow DREO's photo instructions for a free replacement (833-820-0887). First reading. Next check: the CPSC page for updated incident counts as heating season starts.
LESSON FROM: RUDY REYES
Rudy Reyes, a former Marine who served three tours (Afghanistan after 9/11, Iraq in 2003 and Fallujah in 2004 to 2005), wrote Hero Living: Seven Strides to Awaken Your Infinite Power, a 288-page paperback from Celebra that costs $11.91 on Amazon. The publisher describes it as a mindset and personal-growth book that treats physical training and discipline as a central practice, not as a workout manual.
Our takeaway, not a claim from the book: the gym builds a base, and training on uneven ground tests whether that base transfers to real conditions.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Hackers Steal $6.3 Billion From Binance, a Record Crypto Theft
Binance confirmed that about $6.3 billion was stolen in a security incident and suspended deposits and withdrawals. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs says most of the theft happened in about 20 minutes starting at 20:05 UTC on Oct. 29, across 10 blockchains. As of 00:30 UTC on Oct. 30, about $2.7 billion was frozen and about $2.4 billion was still with the attacker. TRM attributes the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor group with "high confidence." Binance has not published a root cause; an initial review pointed to a compromised engineer's laptop. Binance says user funds are safe, it will cover all losses and withdrawals should resume within 48 hours. The previous record was Bybit's $1.5 billion in February 2025. Scam messages follow breaches like this, so open your exchange app yourself instead of tapping links about reopened withdrawals.

WHAT WE'RE RECOMMENDING
Amazon listed the Lone Peak 9 from about $105 to $145 depending on color and size; the color we checked was $119.99. Altra's Balanced Cushioning platform places the heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground, its FootShape toe box lets your toes spread, and the upper is recycled ripstop mesh. Altra says the outsole was updated for more grip.
Budget alternative: Merrell Trail Glove 8. The listing describes a barefoot-style construction and a Vibram TC5+ outsole. Amazon showed new pairs from $89.99 against a $130 list price on Oct. 31, with only a few pairs left.
Target Hair Thinning Where it Begins—at the Cellular Level
There are many products for hair thinning on the market, but they don’t all deliver on their claims. OneSkin’s OS-01 HAIR SCALP SERUM is the only peptide-powered scalp formula scientifically proven to target cellular senescence, a leading driver of age-related thinning, for thicker hair over time.
OVERRATED / UNDERRATED
Overrated: Treadmill running as emergency fitness preparation. It builds cardiovascular endurance but doesn’t develop the lateral stability, proprioception, or terrain-reading skills that trail running provides.
Underrated: Walking as fitness. If trail running feels intimidating, walking a trail with a pack builds leg strength and a cardio base with less impact. Start where you are.

PS: Before the weather turns, scout one local trail in daylight and note where it ends and what the footing is like. It is a small test of your on-foot plan.
