The Polls Got 2024 Wrong. This Doesn't.

Pundits predicted. Polls projected. Most of them missed. Prediction markets didn't.

Kalshi is where people put real money behind their political read — which means the prices you see on who wins the 2028 nomination aren't opinions. They're commitments. Right now, tens of millions of dollars are already trading on who gets the Republican and Democratic nominations.

That's a different signal than any poll you'll read this week.

FROM THE DESK

Years ago, a slow leak behind my washing machine created a mold problem I didn't discover for two months. By then, the bottom 18 inches of drywall was black. The remediation quote? $3,200. The cause? A $2 hose connection that loosened over time. Mold doesn't announce itself. It grows in exactly the conditions that disruptions create: moisture, darkness, and stagnant air.

Here's what I've got this week.

THE BRIEF

Mold: The Silent Threat After Every Water Event

Every flood, leak, roof breach, and prolonged humidity event creates mold conditions. Mold begins growing on wet surfaces within 24 to 48 hours. Once established, it spreads through spores that become airborne and colonize new areas. Prevention is dramatically cheaper than remediation.

The conditions mold needs are moisture, warmth, darkness, and organic material (wood, drywall, carpet, fabric). Deny any one of these and mold can't grow. In practice, moisture is the variable you control. Keep things dry and mold doesn't happen.

After any water event, the clock starts immediately. Dry affected areas within 24 hours. Remove standing water. Run fans and dehumidifiers. Open windows for airflow. Remove wet carpet, insulation, and drywall that can't be dried quickly. The materials are cheaper to replace than the mold remediation that follows if they stay wet.

For ongoing prevention, maintain indoor humidity below 60% (ideally 40% to 50%). Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens. Fix leaks immediately, no matter how small. Inspect behind appliances, under sinks, and in basements quarterly.

If you find existing mold on a hard surface smaller than 10 square feet, you can clean it yourself. A solution of 1 cup bleach per gallon of water kills surface mold. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Ventilate the area. For mold covering more than 10 square feet, or any mold inside walls, consult a professional.

For preparedness, store a spray bottle, bleach, N95 masks, and plastic sheeting with your supplies. After a water event, these allow you to begin mold prevention immediately rather than waiting for hardware stores to open.

ONE THING THIS WEEK

Check behind your washing machine and under your kitchen sink for moisture.

Pull the washing machine out a few inches and look behind it. Open the cabinet under the sink and feel the back wall. Any moisture, discoloration, or musty smell means a leak that needs fixing now.

ON THE RADAR

Nearly Half of U.S. Homes Have Mold — Most Owners Have No Idea

The EPA estimates 47% of U.S. homes have detectable dampness or visible mold, and attributes 4.6 million annual asthma cases directly to indoor mold and dampness exposure. Professional remediation runs $1,000–$3,000 for moderate cases — but maintaining indoor humidity below 50% prevents mold growth entirely. A $12–$15 digital hygrometer is one of the highest-value preparedness tools you can own. You can’t fix what you don’t measure.

LESSON FROM: JONATHAN HOLLERMAN

Jonathan Hollerman addresses mold as a secondary disaster in Survival Theory. In his retreat consulting work, he's seen properties rendered uninhabitable not by the original disaster but by the mold that followed. His principle: water damage has a 24-hour window. What you do in that window determines whether you have a cleanup or a remediation.

Hollerman recommends keeping mold prevention supplies, bleach, masks, fans, and plastic sheeting, as standard emergency inventory, particularly for anyone in flood-prone or high-humidity regions. The $30 in supplies can prevent $3,000 or more in remediation.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

An Iranian Drone Downed a U.S. Apache Over the Hormuz Strait

A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter was struck by an Iranian drone and downed near the Strait of Hormuz on June 9 — the first Apache lost since the conflict began. Both crew members were recovered within two hours by a U.S. Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessel, in what CENTCOM described as the first drone-boat personnel rescue in military history.

President Trump confirmed the attack and pledged a response; U.S. Central Command announced retaliatory strikes against Iran shortly after. The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 20% of global petroleum daily — disruption there flows directly into fuel prices, supply chains, and economic stability at home.

WHAT I'M TESTING

A $12 digital hygrometer placed in my basement displays current humidity and tracks 24-hour high/low. When humidity exceeds 60%, I know to run the dehumidifier before conditions favor mold growth. Simple, battery-powered, and effective. About $12.

Budget alternative: Open your senses. A musty smell in any room is your built-in mold detector. Investigate it immediately.

OVERRATED / UNDERRATED

Overrated: Mold test kits for homes without visible mold. If you can't see or smell mold, a test kit will still find spores because mold spores are everywhere naturally. The test tells you nothing actionable. Fix moisture problems instead.

Underrated: Airflow. A box fan moving air through a damp room costs pennies in electricity and prevents the stagnant conditions mold needs. After any water event, airflow is your best friend.

PS: That $3,200 mold remediation? Insurance covered most of it. But the two weeks of disruption, the tear-out, the drying equipment, the repainting, none of that was covered. A $2 hose check would have prevented all of it.
