I got turned around on a day hike last year. Not lost, exactly, but uncertain enough that the comfortable 7-mile loop became a less than comfortable navigation exercise. I had water for the planned hike, not for the extended one. I had a phone with a map, but no backup if the battery died. The experience was uncomfortable, not dangerous. But it showed me the difference between "out for a few hours" and "prepared for things to go wrong."
Here's what I've got this week.
THE BRIEF
The Day-Tripper Kit: Lightweight Prep for Outdoor Recreation
We've built comprehensive kits for home, car, office, and evacuation. This week is for the millions of Americans who hike, bike, fish, paddle, or spend recreational time outdoors and carry little to no emergency equipment.
The day-tripper kit isn't a survival kit. It's a problem-solver for the scenarios that turn pleasant outings into dangerous ones: getting lost, getting injured, getting stuck after dark, and weather changes.
The ten essentials (adapted from mountaineering tradition): navigation (map, compass, loaded phone with offline maps), sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), insulation (extra layer for unexpected cold or wet), illumination (headlamp or small flashlight), first aid (compact kit from Issue 38), fire (lighter and fire starter), repair (duct tape, knife), nutrition (extra food beyond planned snacks), hydration (extra water plus purification capability), and emergency shelter (emergency bivvy or space blanket).
All ten fit in a small daypack and add 2 to 4 pounds. The extra weight is barely noticeable on a 5-mile hike. But if you twist an ankle at mile 3 and can't walk out, that weight becomes the difference between a manageable wait for rescue and a hypothermic emergency.
Water is the most common shortage. People carry enough for the planned activity and nothing extra. Carry one more bottle than you think you need and a small filter or purification tablets for any natural water source you encounter.
Communication matters in backcountry. Cell service is unreliable on most trails. A whistle (three blasts is the universal distress signal) weighs nothing and carries further than your voice. The Garmin inReach Mini (Issue 31) provides satellite communication for solo hikers.

The most detailed federal study of National Park Service search-and-rescue operations found that from 2003 to 2006, teams ran 12,337 SAR missions for 15,537 visitors, at a cost of $16.55 million. Day hiking was the single activity most likely to trigger a rescue call. Researchers found the incidents weren't caused by remote terrain or bad luck: error in judgment, fatigue, and insufficient equipment, clothing, and experience were the most common contributing factors — exactly what a lightweight kit and a turnaround plan are built to prevent.

A Colorado Day Hike Turned Into a 48-Hour Backcountry Rescue — Her Gear Is Why She Made It Out
Custer County Search and Rescue reached a hiker with a knee injury just below Broken Hand Pass on Sunday. Given the terrain, they called in Chaffee County Search and Rescue and Flight for Life Colorado, which flew in four rescuers and 125 pounds of gear while 15 ground team members hiked in on foot. What was supposed to be a day trip stretched into nearly 48 hours in the backcountry before an all-night trek got everyone out by 6 a.m.
Officials credited one thing for how it went: even though it was only meant to be a day trip, the hiker was carrying warm clothing, food, water, a phone, a battery bank, a headlamp, a helmet, an emergency bivy, and a Garmin inReach. Every item mattered before the rescue was over.

WHAT I'M TESTING
SOL Emergency Bivvy
This is the emergency shelter I carry in every daypack. It's a tear-resistant Mylar bivvy that weighs 3.8 ounces and packs to the size of a fist. I tested it on a 40-degree evening. Inside the bivvy with a light jacket, I was warm enough to sleep, not comfortably, but safely.
Compared to a traditional space blanket, the bivvy is dramatically better because it encloses you completely, trapping warm air instead of just reflecting it. The material is also quieter and more durable than standard space blankets, which tear in wind.
I've carried it on probably 50 outings and used it once (an unplanned late finish on a trail). That single use justified every ounce I've carried it. About $25.
Budget alternative: An emergency space blanket ($2). Less effective than a bivvy but better than nothing. Wrap it around you and huddle out of the wind.
OVERRATED / UNDERRATED
Overrated: Heavy survival kits for day hikes. A 10-pound survival kit discourages carrying and ruins the hiking experience. The day-tripper kit adds 2 to 4 pounds and covers 95% of realistic day-hike emergencies.
Underrated: A whistle. Three blasts carry further than shouting, require less energy, and are universally recognized as a distress signal. A pealess whistle ($3) weighs nothing and works when you're too exhausted or injured to yell.
